Afghanistan is a country in south Asia which has about 38 million inhabitants.
The capital and largest city is Kabul. Other major cities are Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif.
It is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to the north, and Tajikistan and China to the northeast.
The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the state formed in Afghanistan in 2004. It was preceded by an interim administration created after the overthrow of the Taliban's Islamic Emirates by US-led troops in the autumn of 2001, and a transitional administration that in 2002-2004 prepared a new constitution and held general elections. Throughout the existence of the republic, there have been civil wars between the government and the Taliban. In August 2021, the government of the republic was overthrown by the Taliban, who again proclaimed the country an Islamic emirate. The new regime is not internationally recognized.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was an Islamic state ruled by the Taliban movement from 1996 to 2001. Even when their power culminated, they never controlled more than about 90% of the country, the rest ruled by the Northern Alliance. On August 15, 2021 the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan and on August 19, they again declared the country an Islamic Emirate.
