Muonio (sami Muoná) is a Municipality in the region of Lappi (Lapland) in Finland. The municipality has about 2 300 inhabitants and is located in the historical province of Lapland.

Location[edit]

Muonio is a mountain country in northwestern Lapland, the highest mountains of which are Pallastunturi Taivaskero (809 m), Keimiötunturi (610 m) and Ruototunturi (572 m).

Bordering municipalities are Enontekiö in the north, Kittilä in the east, Kolari in the south and (in Sweden) the municipality Pajala in the west. A bridge leads over the river "Muonionjoki", which serves as the national border.

Urban areas[edit]

Muonio church village is the only urban area with 1 160 inhabitants.

There are four turfzones in Muonio, where as one is counted as a National park zone and one as a Holy zone.

The most taken zone is MuonionKirkko that is placed by the church of Muonio.
