Upcoming events

If you are organising an open event, don't forget to write to insider@turfgame.com a couple of months in advance to get the information about your event into the newsletter :)

Skåne Open – 23rd of August

Turf Skåne is hosting Skåne Open Saturday August 23 on Ribersborgs beach in Malmö. There will be three optional heats, foot, wheel and water. Foot and wheel are open events and will give you the (one) event medal for participation. Water is closed. There will be cups for the first three in each heat. Participation is free. We are hoping for many entries, and this year we would love to see some participants from neighboring Denmark! More info and registration HERE.

The Bonanza 2025 in Edinburgh

Bonanza 2025 was held in Edinburgh, Scotland and 46 turfers competed for the Gold in the Bike event and 133 turfers took part in the Foot event. The event was well-organised by ESOC and you can read their report of this World Cup in Turf HERE.

In the Bike event, MaXi from Sweden took Gold, with MrAce from Sweden claiming the Silver and Hodge from Scotland managed to snag the Bronze from MrJokerit at the very end. In the Foot event it was an exciting race to the end with moviemania and RabbitRail fighting for the Gold just to be overrun in the end by UK turfer DrWes. rabbit_rail took home the Silver and Moviemania ended up with a Bronze.

At the Bonanza banquet, the location for next year's Bonanza was revealed: Gothenburg, Sweden. This will be the first time the Bonanza is held on the West Coast of Sweden. See you there in September 2026!

Also at the Bonanza banquet, Drassen (one of the creators of Turf) held a speech with his very own poem about the Edinburgh Bonanza:

”Little did we know that anyone we didn't know would show up to our first Bonanza, more than a decade ago.

Little did we know that local communities would grow, and keep the river flow.

Little did we know that fearglas would show up on the telly amidst the snow, and make the servers blow -up.

Little did we know that from below, we would come here and watch you throw such a fantastic show!”

And yes, it was a fantastic show :) For anyone wanting to use their UK ETA again, the SCONanza will, most likely, be held in Glasgow next year in May/June.

Events held in June

The Uppsala 2025 in Uppsala

Another event that took place during June, was the Uppsala 2025 organised by Kygni. He wanted to combine water zones, foot zones and bike zones during a 3 hour Event. He included crazy shaped zones and a few mini competitions, where the winners are not yet crowned since it requires manual counting of 60 zones for all the turfers in the event.

Here is Kygni's report about the Event:

”The event in Uppsala was a combination of jogging, swimming and biking, and it was reflected in the top-3 places. A jogger, SJ took the gold, hearing about the event the night before it occured. He jogged to SunnerstaÅsen that was filled with jogging zones in a forest-terrain and managed to keep a lot of zones and claim the gold. The second place went to MaXi, a turfer from Alingsås who was one of the few ones who dared swim out and take a few water zones.

The water zones was a really good long-term strategy to win points in the event and by biking during the rest of the event, MaXi managed to secure the silver. The bronze went to a turfer living in the event area, Vargen12, who managed to secure the third place by only biking during the event and with great knowledge about the area. After the event, we had a lovely Turf BBQ in Sunnerstagropen. Here is a sub-optimal picture taken by placing my phone on a luggage rack of another turfer:

As for the special prizes I sent out an email about a few hours before the event. I will calculate them this week and reveal the results during the weekend.”

The Turf Gbg Open in Gothenburg

Turf Göteborg held its 12th open event in a windy and occasionally rainy Gothenburg. There were 55 participants who braved the weather and fought their way to an event medal. There were participants from Karlskoga, Stockholm, Västerås, Scotland in addition to the local turfers. Medals were awarded to the top three in each heat (foot and bike) and for the total score. In addition, the one who was closest to the average score also received a medal. See the results lists HERE.

Vacation tip from Vintentia

At least in Sweden, July is the great holiday month of summer. Here is a vacation tip from Vintentia:

”No holiday plans yet? Then I can recommend a bike ride along the Klarälvsbanan, NKIJ, an old railway embankment that has been asphalted and which (in my opinion) starts in Uddeholm and ends at Kroppkärrsbadet in Karlstad. If you drive straight, it's 93 kilometers from the zone Början to the zone Kroppkärrsbad, but that's not what a turfer does, right?

My last ride on the route was last Wednesday, the first must have been in 2015, when Simpson and I came up with the idea of proposing a bunch of zones along the track. It's been 15 times so far, at least once a year! I have the advantage of having my parents' home less than a kilometer from the start of the track, but there is also an excellent little hotel 50 meters from the zone.

Most of the time I have cycled from Skoghall to Uddeholm, and then my husband cycles the other way a couple of days later, but this year I had the privilege of cycling south, which is much more pleasant. First, it is actually downhill almost the entire way (but don't worry, there are no "real" uphills anywhere), and secondly, it is more pleasant to start with forest and longer between the zones and then come down to more buildings, open landscape and denser between the zones.

The weather was perfect for cycling, the temperature was between 15 and 20 degrees, overcast and rain was in the air. Then there are few people on the course and you don't have to get hot and sweaty. Since I have ridden so many times, I know exactly where the perfect stops are, but for the rest of you here are some tips:

The best zone for wild strawberries is already before the start, the zone MulleVy offers several hundred meters of bright red carpet of the delicious berry. Bring a bucket! The best way to get there is to cycle on the gravel road to just north of the zone where the railway comes close to the road, there is a mailbox with a path down to the railway. Yes, between Hagfors and Stjärnsfors there are still rails! Feel free to check with Hagfors Railway Museum if it is possible to rent a trolley!

Before the start in Uddeholm, you can also visit Geijers Glasscafé at the zone Geijersbron or the small café at Sjögräns manor, keep an eye on the small sign in the ditch just before the zone Sjögränd to get there! Open in good weather!

AntGoneCrazy in Myra is a zone with history, in my photo album you can follow the demolition of the place. The zone will probably change location and name soon, as the plans to build a hostel there have been cancelled and the land has been sold to a private individual.

Another interesting place can be found in Ransäter. Take the bridge over the Klarälven and Ranån up to the church, take a turn to Geijersskolan where they train church musicians, stop and have a coffee at Erlandergården and then take the road behind it down to the oldest bridge over Ranån. Otherwise it is quite deserted all the way to Deje, but always stop at Kalles Kabyss, it is mandatory and also about halfway, at least if you take a few extra zones in Deje and Forshaga!

At the zone Syrsjön they have equipped themselves with several tables, benches and a barbecue area for this year, a little drink break here in the completely unique environment through a rock cut is not a bad idea. Then you come to Forshaga, which honestly doesn't have much interesting to offer, but quite zone dense if your legs are not already too tender. Lots of hills here! After Forshaga, you just have to glide the rest of the way to Karlstad, you leave Klarälven and glide over to Ulvsby and Lake Alstern. If you cycle late enough in the season, there are hazel bushes at the zone AlsterVy, just pick them!

The last part of the Klarälvsbanan, over Lorensberg and Kroppkärr has a speed limit of 30 km/h! This is because there are many people who exercise in the area and the relatively steep slope made it popular to set Strava records. In combination with several connections with quite poor visibility, it became really dangerous.

Once you arrive at Kroppkärrssjön (where there is free parking), it is nice to jump in the water and take the water zone while thinking about the next adventure! A total of 120 km, 160 zones and 35,000 points was the result for me this time, see the details HERE. And by the way: there are blue toilets all the way, always provided with paper, so don't worry about that part. You do need to bring a water bottle, though.”

There are lots of old railway embankments turned bike/walk paths in Sweden. Some are more famous than others, like the Klarälvsbanan and Sjuhäradsrundan, a 150 kms long loop with stops in Borås and Ulricehamn. Old railway embankments are usually very nice to bike on, if they have been looked after. In the Uppsala region we have an old railway track between Uppsala and Enköping, but unfortunatly only the first half between Uppsala and Örsundsbro is nice to bike (and turf). The part between Örsundsbro and Enköping has partly been privatized and also neglected.
