Round winners – June 2026 (Round #192)

Congratulations to the winners of round June 2026: AJHB from London biked home another Gold (#5), Ostystning from Västra Götaland turfed home his first Silver and Ita from Skåne secured her second Bronze. Well done mates!

Skåne Open 22nd of August in Malmö, Sweden

As usual in August, Turf Skåne is hosting the Skåne Open in Malmö. You may participate in Foot and/or Wheel and/or Water heats. Foot and Wheel are open events which will reward participants with an Event medal. Real cups are awaiting as winnings for the first three in each heat. Info and registration HERE.

A Zone Worthy of a Detour – by HaileGåBraSel and ReadySteadyGå

The zone SK751 in Gottröra has an interesting history behind it. In the morning on December 27 1991 the flight SK751 bound for Warsaw in Poland took off from Arlanda Airport. Soon after the plane was airborne, ice on the wings, ice that was almost invisible and therefore had not been noticed after the de-icing process, broke off. The ice was sucked into the engines and destroyed them. Without functioning engines the pilots were forced to make an emergency landing in a field in Gottröra Village, around 15 km from the airport.

The impact with the ground was so fierce that the plane broke up into three large pieces. But thanks to the skill of the pilots, aided by a great deal of luck, all passengers and the entire crew survived the crash. That all onboard survive such a severe incident is almost unheard of. Therefore, this accident is sometimes referred to as The Miracle at Gottröra.

The zone SK751 is located in a field and is shaped as the pieces of the plane were lying on the ground after the crash. To some it might come out as a bit macabre that a zone is placed at the site of a plane crash. But we feel that, given the fact that everybody survived, it is a zone worthy of a detour."

We will soon move on to a system where the round ends one hour before the new one starts. This gap of one hour will be used to make sure everything is ready on the server before the new round starts. So hopefully everyone can then start the game synchronized and snappy at 11 UTC, without any problems or lag. But don't expect it to be perfect the first time..:) For all you players we might use the hour to present stats from the round in the app.

Editor's Opinion/Corner

Summer is here and that, at least for me, means Turf Vacation(s). We started this year with a quick trip to Northern Sweden. We spend the last Saturday of the round, in Piteå with our bikes. It was a sunny day with hints of thunder in the distance. Piteå was a nice surprise for me. Although I have spend a lot of time in nearby Skellefteå, I have never really visited Piteå (not even its famous Sea Bath). It was very bikeable city with few hills. We met very talkative local turfers (hint: the block time in the zone we met in was released and the zone could be taken one more time). First turfer we met was Xoff with his dog. Next up is a road trip to Norway :)

Twice now a Survey box has appeared when opening the Turf app. The first time the question was ”Which is your favorite zone?”. I answered BlåFågelholk if I recall correctly. It is a zone in Uppsala and located on a very nice forest path connecting other zones. And in the zone there is a bright blue birdhouse, hence the name. I like it because it is a local zone that I for several years took many times a week on my way to work and it made for a nice change from the regular asphalt bike paths.

That first survey question was answered by 545 turfers with 91% answering the question. The break down of the Favorite zone is as follows:

The home/nearest zone dominates. "the one at my house", "all 15 in Kvidinge where I live — bike out 40 min, perfect", "Åkergymmet, nearest to my dear mom". Proximity meets habit gives the favorite.

Winner zones / self-named zones are objects of pride. "my very own winner zone" Owning/naming a zone is a strong bond. Pets/family. DustyZone ("named after my dog"), "A zone for Linda". Milestones. "Tokyo tower … was my number 5,000 zone".

These Survey questions will continue. The first two did only appear once when starting the Turf app, so don't think ”I'll do it later”, do it when it appears. It is your chance to give feedback on a specific topic to the people behind Turf.
