Events in May

May saw several exciting Events take place.

Åland Open 2024

Åland held its first Open Event, co-organized with Örebro-turfers. It was visited by turfers from both Sweden and Finland. The winners in both Events were from Stockholm. DaHunter ran away from everybody else and took Gold in the Foot Event and magnusn won the Bike Event with about 200 points.

Scottish Turf Open 2024

The Scottish turfers held their second Open Event, now dubbed SCONanza, in Endinburgh the first weekend of June and it was visited by turfers from all over UK and quite a few Swedes. Here is a report written by MarkkuESOC:

"The second Scottish Turf Open Championships, this year known as SCOnanza 2024 took place over the late May/early June weekend. Based around the delightful Northern side of Endinburgh with its many ex-railway lines now repurposed as footpaths/cycle routes and the green gorge of the Water of Leith as well as an urban mix the competition areas had everything!

The weekend followed a format of Welcome foot event (Friday evening), 90 minute bike and then foot Open championships (Saturday), followed by SCOnanza banquet (Saturday evening) and then a “Crazy Closing” fun event (Sunday morning). The organisers were delighted to welcome 8 Turfers from Sweden, including some good friends who had returned from the previous year and over 50 UK based competitors as the game continues to grow to the West of the North Sea. Many Turfers had purchased the special event SCOnanza 2024 t-shirts incorporating the logo of scones (a scone being a small unsweetened or lightly sweetened cake made from flour, fat, and milk, very popular in Scotland).

The Friday night Welcome foot event winner with 577 points was MarkkuEsoc but the victory was oh so close, beating the unlucky Suilven by a mere 0.3 points. Little did we realise that the results on Turfgame.com go down to decimal points! Saturday brought beautiful warm conditions for the Open events and planner féarglas set some excellent zones to keep 30 cyclists manically busy for the 90 minutes. 0beroff took a victory for Sweden, taking over the lead in a dramatic final 10 minutes as ultimately the battling locals; granitemike (2nd) and Dangermous (3rd) cancelled out each other’s points per hour (pph).

In the Open foot event steventon_gang led throughout, though only narrowly winning from FeTaTo who had a very strong last 45 minutes rising from the middle of the pack of 47 eager Turfers, with local Edinburgh turfer ~~><)))> finishing 3rd. We then socialised in the evening at a local pizza restaurant on the banks of the Water of Leith, stuffing ourselves with the abundance of delicious food on offer and enjoying the post event prize giving.

Sunday morning saw the totally crazy, anything goes event...think huge zones, tiny zones, weird shaped zones, fancy dress, even a special appearance from the roving Turf-o character to gain extra points. Add in some cute and cuddly toy potatoes to be found on the slopes of Calton Hill to the East of Edinburgh city centre and what wasn't to like!

Cute-potatos-and-winners-trophy.jpg

Christmas2 this time took the victory after a close run tit-for-tat finish against ~~><)))>.

The whole SCOnanza weekend concluded with a social at a local gastropub, much discussion, brunch and plenty of teas and coffees! Sadly we all said our goodbyes to friends old and new; hopefully we’ll see you all back again for more SCOnanza action in 2025. Make sure to see what the organisers can conjure up next year - competitor feedback suggests it will be fabulous!!"

DxBigBang

In Germany a Closed tri-city-Event, DxBigBang, took place on Saturday the 1st of June. Turfers in 3 different cities were competing against each other in a private Event (or else the Event area would have encompassed a large part of Germany). 30 zones were placed in each City in a similar geographical area. The City team that took most points together during the Event, and therefore won, was Berlin, followed by Hamburg and Cologne. Hamburg and Cologne had a team of 5 turfers, Berlin had 10 turfers in their team.

Warded & eddyueue

I am sure most turfers check in on Warded every now and then. It is where you can get a lot of statistics about Turf. The man behind Warded wrote a piece about his work to keep Warded going and interesting for all turfers.

”My name is Edward Olsson, eddyueue in the Turf world, and I am a freelancing data engineer for a living. I started the work on Warded in the beginning of 2011, half a year after Turfs release on the Android Market (Play store today). There and then the goal was to find out how the Turf data and insights could be used by the players. What I was most curious about at the time was the different patterns in time and place that one could imagine people being out Turfing.

The Warded website holds general and private statistics from the game. It does so by leveraging the public Turf API as well as using a secret connection to Turfs data crypt. Most data is updated every 15 minutes while toplists are generated around 00:20 every night, game time. By logging in on the website you can track your progress in whatever you choose to track, like unique zones/turfers or taking 10 zones in the fastest time possible.

During the spring of 2024 some performance issues were resolved and some of the pages got a facelift and added features - like the personal toplist standings. The features added are mostly suggestions which Turfers have put in the Warded forum thread: https://forum.turfgame.com/viewtopic.php?t=569. What do you think should be added next?

Personally I would like to do something with the league system or perhaps add personal color palettes to the map of unique zones? You can log in to Warded in two ways: Visit turfgame.com and while logged in click the Warded link on the first page. If you can't find the link, there is another one on the info page https://turfgame.com/info under "Third party". If you have registered an email with Turf, that is also connected to a Google account, you can click the "Login" link on any warded page, to authenticate with Google and the same email that you have used for your Turf account. If you find something on the website that is horribly wrong, you can create an issue in the issue tracker: https://issues.turfgame.com/, just select the "Warded issue" option.

There are a lot of third party Turf websites. The one I use the most is turfmedals.com which also holds a great collection of links to other Turf websites. Go check them out! Join a Turf Discord at ” https://discord.gg/byhk3sh6 ”

So there, if you have any suggestions for eddyueue about Warded, log into the Turf Forum and find his Warded-thread. Sadly, the Turf Forum has had some issues recently. Some have been resolved, but not everything is well yet with the Forum. The responsible party behind the Forum is aware of the problems and work is on-going to stabalize it. It seems to be working when this issue of Turf Insider is going live.

New Turf Crew member

Turf Crew has a new member, Orresta living in Trondheim, Norway. Turf Insider asked him a few questions:

1. What is your turfnick? Is there a story behind it, if so what?

  • My Turf Nick is Orresta and I took it since I have some history playing football and golf in Orresta.

2. How long have you been turfing and how did you found out about it?

  • I did not remember but after a quick look in warded I found that I have been a member since 2011-07-25 11:53:42.

Reason why I started was that I got my first smart-phone and searched for some physical gps-game, after some investigating I found Turf and since then I am hooked.

3. What is the best thing about Turf? And the worst (if there is any)?

  • Turf is good when it comes to daily exercise and also when you visit new places since the zones are normally placed in nice locations.

It is easy to get a little bit addictive and a trip to the supermarket can easily take 2-3 hours. :-)

4. What made you want to become a zone maker?

  • I felt that I have played for a long time and now I want to make my contribution.

5. Which is your fave zone? Can be divided into a) the one you take most often b) the one you really felt "WOW" when taking

  • In Trondheim, where I live now, HavsteinZone is a favourite. From here you can see the whole city center from above.
Havstein-Zone.jpg

6. Anything else you'd like to tell the Turf World about yourself :)

  • Last year I moved to Norway and hopefully my contribution can help Turf to expand here."

The developers have a message about the highly anticipated Monumentalist medal:

"We just wanted to share with you that the medal is not forgotten. It is not ready, but not forgotten either! Stay tuned."

Did you know...

...38 players made it to Day 1000 of the Daily-serie (take 5 zones per day). The webpage Daily RIP is where you also can check your streak for the Daily-serie medals.
