A Zone Worthy of a Detour – by miawita
Just the name got me going when a new water zone appeared in Boxholm Municipality, Östergötland. (ed. Djuparöven – translate at your own risk).
I brought my daughter Emmeth (who is an excellent map reader) so we could find the right place.
When we parked the car and packed our swimming mattress and waterproof bags and swimwear, we started walking through the forest. We had no path or anything to follow, so of course we walked a little crosswise and up a mountain where we had to turn around. Finally we arrived at the bog that seemed to be around the entire puddle (where the zone was located).
But all we had to do was stand on the bog and inflate the mattress and change. My daughter was doing dress swimming (good choice) but I was wearing fluttery swimming shorts that all the millions of tadpoles liked. Once in the water we kicked ourselves out floating on the swimming mattress and the phones held high. My daughter was terrified because she hates not being able to see the bottom. When reaching the zone, we can't take it because of the poor cell phone coverage. Damn it. Back to land and then up on the wobbly moss, but now we find something that could be some kind of tractor track back to the car.
Once home we decide to get a sim card with better coverage and decide that we will make another attempt the next day. Same procedure as the day before except that we found it a bit faster. Another swim for the daughter who puts up with her mother's crazy ideas. And now we managed to take it – Djuparöven. I have been there once again, dragging an inflatable kayak and assisted Recycling.
Djuparöven - a small puddle and quite warm even at the beginning of summer.
Server Upgrade
It's been a rough spring on the server side — high player counts have stretched the game servers, and availability has not been where we want it to be. Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us through the bumpy patches; we know it hasn't always been a smooth experience, and your patience has meant a lot.
This kind of behind-the-scenes work is only possible thanks to all the players who have chosen to become supporters. If you'd like to help keep Turf running and evolving, you can read about supporter status HERE. //TurfCrew
Local groups in the League – news from the developers
From the early beginning when we created the leagues, the idea was to have some kind of local groups. The idea was that the competition in each group should be more fair considering the amount of zones. However it was hard to implement and other things took our time, so the sorting was decided to be random instead. *Quick jump to 2026*
Now we have finally implemented the local groups!!
It will be extremely local in the lower leagues, and as you progress up the ladder you will start to meet a bit less localized competition. Just as in most sports leagues out there.
We expect more local talk about the groups, more local competition in the neighbourhood, and hopefully more joy out there. But hey, let's find out!
By the way: the lower groups only have 9 members from the start so that new turfers can join a local group as well. AND of course some persons don't really have any local competitors in their league. In that case they will be added to another group, nothing is perfect I guess.
Editor's Opinion
The last weekend of the May round, I went to Glasgow and took part in the SCOnanza organized by the Scottish turfers. Previously this 3-day event has been held in Edinburgh, but this year it was heralded by dangermous and set in his hometown Glasgow. Four Events were planned for the weekend, one closed Welcome Event on Friday evening, two open Events on Saturday (foot and bike) and one closed Event on Sunday (subway turf!).
It was very well organized with good venues (pubs!) for the participating turfers to hang out before, after and during the Events. It was great to meet up with fellow turfers both from Scotland and other places. The weather was also behaving for most of the time, only a few drops of rain at the Sunday event. The trophies for the winner in the Saturday Open Events were wooden Turf avatar a la Glasgow made by the round's World winner, Fashven.
The Sunday Subway closed event was organised around Glasgow subway, the third oldest in the world and consisting of a ring around the city with 15 stations. Zones were concentrated around the stations and the idea was to use the subway to get around faster than by foot. It was certainly a novel idea! The SCOnanza will be back next year, probably with new crazy event ideas.
