East Lothian is a municipality in the region of Scotland in the United Kingdom. The municipality has about 105,800 inhabitants and is located in the southeastern part of the region.

East Lothian (Scots: East Lowden; Scottish Gaelic: Lodainn an Ear) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, as well as a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area. The county was also known as Haddingtonshire.

Location

East Lothian lies south of the Firth of Forth in the eastern central Lowlands of Scotland. It borders City of Edinburgh to the west, Midlothian to the south-west and the Scottish Borders to the south.

Urban areas

Its administrative centre and former county town is Haddington while the largest town is Musselburgh with about 20,800 inhabitants.

Other towns within the municipality are Auldhame, Bolton, Broxburn, Cockenzie, Dirleton, Dunbar, East Fortune, East Linton, Gullane, Kingston, Longniddry, North Berwick, Pencaitland, Port Seton, Prestonpans and Tranent.
