The Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead (in turf Gateshead) is a municipality in the region of North East England in United Kingdom. The municipality has about 190,000 inhabitants and is located in its entirety in the county of Tyne and Wear.

Location[edit]

The municipality is located in the northeast England about 400 kilometers north of London.

It is bordered by the local authorities areas of Newcastle upon Tyne to the north, Northumberland to the west, County Durham to the south, the City of Sunderland to the south-east, and South Tyneside to the east.

Urban areas[edit]

With its 120,000 inhabitants, Gateshead is the largest city and capital. Other communities in the municipality are: Felling, Whickham, Blaydon, Rowlands Gill and Lamesley.
