Norrtälje is a municipality in the region of Stockholm in Sweden. The municipality has about 64,300 inhabitants and is located in its entirety in the province Uppland.

From Kapellskär there are ferries to Finland, Estonia and Poland.

Location[edit]

It is the largest municipality in terms of area in Stockholm County and is located in the eastern parts of the Uppland province. The municipality has the Sea of Åland to the east, where the Norrtäljeån river empties from the west. Adjacent municipalities are, in the south Österåker and Vallentuna and in the southwest Sigtuna, all in Stockholm County. To the west, the municipality borders Knivsta, Uppsala and Östhammar in Uppsala County. On the island of Märket in the Åland Sea, the municipality has a land border with Hammarland in the province Åland in Finland.

Urban areas[edit]

The urban area Norrtälje is the largest with approximately 21,900 inhabitants and constitutes the municipality's central town.

Other urban areas in the municipality are Bergshamra, Blidö, Edsbro, Finsta, Grisslehamn, Gräddö, Hallstavik, Herräng, Hästängen, Nysättra, Riala, Rimbo, Rånäs, Skebobruk, Spillersboda, Svanberga, Sättra, Söderby-Karl, Södersvik and Älmsta.
