Rovaniemi (north sami Roavvenjárga, inari sami: Ruávinjargâ; skolt sami: Ruäʹvnjargg) is a municipality in the region of Lappi (Lapland) in Finland. The municipality has about 63 000 inhabitants.

Rovaniemi is located at the Arctic Circle.

The city was to 90 percent burned down by retreating German troops in the autumn of 1944 during the Lapland War. Only a few older buildings escaped the flames. Alvar Aalto drew up a new city plan, according to which the city was gradually built up. The city's new administration building and theater building were also designed by Alvar Aalto.

Location[edit]

Rovaniemi is located in the northwestern part of Finland.

Bordering municipalities are Kolari in the northwest, Kittilä in the north, Sodankylä in the northeast, Pelkosenniemi in the east, Kemijärvi in the east, Posio i n the southeast, Tervola in the southwest, Pello in the west, Ylitornio in the west and Tornio in the west.

Urban areas[edit]

The adminstrative center is Rovaniemi central with 50 842 inhabitants, other urban areas are Rautiosaari, Muurola, Sinettä and Nivankylä.

The most taken zone is RovanCityZone that is placed by Lordi's Square.
