Thüringen (Thuringia), officially the Free State of Thuringia (German: Freistaat Thüringen), is a region in the middle of Germany. The region encompasses the bundesland with the same name and has about two million inhabitants.
Bordering regions are Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) in the northwest, Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) in the northeast, Sachsen (Saxony) in the east, Bayern (Bavaria) in the south and Hessen (Hesse) in the west.
