Kvarken is a turfzone in the municipality of Korsholm in the region of Länsi- ja Sisä-Suomi (Western and Inner Finland) in Finland. This zone is located in the province of Pohjanmaa and is counted as a World Heritage Site.

Placement[edit]

This zone is placed on the island Björkö in municipality of Korsholm (in finnish Mustasaari). Korsholm municipality has a Swedish-speaking majority.

Björkö[edit]

Björkö is an island on the Finnish side of the Kvarken, the village on the island is called Björköby. There are also lots of islets that belong to Björkö. The zone is located in the Björköby village. The lookout tower "Saltkaret" (the salt shaker) is located close to the zone.

Accessibility[edit]

Via road banks, it is possible to get to the island and the village. However, there is no separate bike path for the last about two miles. There are no regular buses or boats to Björköby, but in summer there are both World Heritage buses and World Heritage cruises to Björköby. There are usually bike rentals on the island.

World Heritage Kvarken archipelago / High Coast[edit]

Kvarken is where the Gulf of Bothnia is narrowest and what is called the High Coast is a coastal area in Västernorrland. The World Heritage Site is located in both Sweden and Finland, and the World Heritage Zone is located in Finland. In other words, the area of World Heritage is very large, but there are World Heritage sites that are located in more countries and are larger. See the zone StruvesArc for example.

The name Kvarken[edit]

Kvark is an old word for throat and Kvarken is a "neck" that separates the Gulf of Bothnia from the Bothnian Sea. If you say Norra Kvarken, it is generally to distinguish it from Södra Kvarken (the narrowest part between Sweden and Åland). Only the Kvarken generally refers to this strait at the Gulf of Bothnia.
