Halden is a municipality in the region of Østlandet (Eastern Norway) in Norway. With about 31,400 inhabitants. The municipality has about 31,400 inhabitants and is located in the county (fylke) of Viken.

Location[edit]

The municipality is located in the southern part of Viken county (fylke). In the south, the municipality borders Sweden with, among other things, the border crossings Svinesund (road E6) and Kornsjø (railway crossing).

Adjacent municipalities are Sarpsborg in the northwest, Rakkestad in the north and Aremark in the east, all in the region of Østlandet. Adjacent municipalities in Sweden are Strömstad in the southwest, Tanum in the south and Dals-Ed in the southeast, all in Västra Götalands county.

Urban areas[edit]

The urban area Halden (formerly called Fredrikshald) is the largest with about 25,300 inhabitants and constitutes the municipality's central town. Other urban areas in the municipality are Isebakke and Sponvika.
