Stavanger is a municipality in the region of Vestlandet (Western Norway) in Norway. The municipality has about 144,000 inhabitants and is located in Rogaland county.

Stavanger is Norway's fourth largest city municipality with 142,034 inhabitants (1 January 2020).

Nickname: Oljebyen, The oil capital

Location[edit]

Stavanger borders the municipalities Randaberg, Sandnes, Sola and in the north to Bokn.

Urban areas[edit]

The urban area Stavanger is the municipality's central town. It forms the part of the urban area Stavanger / Sandnes that belongs to Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county.

Stavanger (together with Sandnes) is Norway's third most populous urban area with its 197,892 inhabitants (1 January 2011) after Oslo (839 423), Bergen (220 418), but before Trondheim (152 845).

The fact that the urban area has more inhabitants than the municipality is due to the fact that the urban area (the connected buildings) also consists of parts of the neighboring municipalities Sandnes, Randaberg and Sola.
