Daejeon is one of 15 regions in South Korea. It is a major city in central South Korea, and with its 1.5 million inhabitants is one of the country's largest cities. It is the administrative capital of the province Chungcheongnam (South Chungcheong) which extends mainly west and northwest of the city. Daejeon, however, is a separate administrative unit, separate from Sydchungcheong, as a major city (gwangyeoksi).

The region also borders region a Chungcheongbuk (North Chungcheong) to the east.
