Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia) is one of 16 regions in Germany. The region encompasses the bundesland with the same name and has about 18 million inhabitants.
Bordering regions are Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) in the northeast, Hessen (Hesse) in the southeast, Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) in the south as well as the country Belgium and (in the Netherlands) Limburg in the west and Gelderland and Overijssel in the northwest.
