Tornio (swedish Torneå, north sami Duortnus) is a municipality and town in the region of Lappi (Lapland) in Finland. The municipality has about 21 600 inhabitants and is located in the province of Lapland.

Location[edit]

Tornio is located farthest up in the Bothnian Bay by the Torne River estuary and the border to Sweden. Tornio is located right by Haparanda, which is on the Swedish side of the border.

Tornio and Haparanda collaborate in many areas, including a joint elite team in bandy and joint marketing in tourism. As a turfer, it is no problem to turf in the cities on either side of the border during the same visit.

Tornio is the only urban area with 16 977 inhabitants on an area of 35.62 square kilometers (2016).
