Placement[edit]

This zone is placed by the North Harbour in Kruununhaka district in central Helsinki. Here you will find the Restaurant ship Relandersgrund.

Relandersgrund[edit]

The lighthouse ship Relandersgrund (Relander's shallow) is a former lighthouse that was located at Relander's shallow outside of Rauma.

The ship was built between 1886 and 1888 in Turku at the Wm. Crichton & Co.- shipyard. The ship has a steel hull, made by riveting. It measures 27.1 × 6.7 × 2.1 meters. The draft is 168 tons. The ship had two masts and sails, an oil-powered light unit and a compressed air foghorn. Around the turn of the century, a steam boiler was installed on board for the foghorn, the anchor winch and the heating. The ball motor that used the foghorn was replaced with a generator that supplied power to the headlight. This device, which was rare at the time and operated with an arc light, was used e.g. in pilotage. All other lights on board worked with oil.

The ship was unmanned, which means that it was powered by a tugboat. The sails were usually raised only to relieve the load on the anchor chain in rough seas.

Relandersgrund served for almost three decades, for the the winter she was usually towed to Rauma or Turku.

In 1918, the ship was overwintering in Turku, and waiting for docking. Due to the civil war, it had not been towed into place last summer. In Turku, Russian revolutionary sailors hijacked the lighthouse ship and towed it to the southern coast of Finland. When they encountered too many ice obstacles it was decided to abandon the ship and sink it in the beach water.

The ship was salvaged and then repaired in Tallinn after the war. However, the ship was already in such poor condition that it was decided to use it only as a reserve lighthouse.

Since 2012, Relandersgrund has been operating as a Restaurant ship in Helsinki.
