Placement[edit]

This zone is placed by the shore of the Kirkkolampi pond south of Rovaniemi center, by the road "Yliopistonkatu".

Kirkkolampi pond[edit]

Kirkkolampi is a pond located in Rovaniemi, next to Rovaniemi Church. The pond is probably named after the church. Next to the church is also the Harjulampi pond. Like Harjulampi, Kirkkolampi is connected to the Kemijoki River. Kirkkolampi is not connected to Harjulampi except through the Kemijoki River. There is a small island in the middle of Kirkkolampi. Rainbow salmon have been planted in the church pond several summers, but today but today the planting has ceased.

Due to the construction of the Valajaskoski power plant in 1960, the surface of the Kemijoki River rose, and the water rose on the hay meadow next to the church. The undulating meadow was restored to a pond as population increased in the surrounding areas.

The Environment Center drew up a rehabilitation plan in 1984, and the pond was dredged and dammed in 1991-92. The water in the pond changes through the fountains. A demonstration park for plants that thrive in Lapland was planned for the Kirkkolammenpuisto park, which was completed in 1995. The area of the park is 2.9 ha. The park also has a children’s playground, sand and grass fields, and a dirt road around the pond, which serves as a ski trail in winter.

About 10,000 plants have been planted, of which 44 tree species (200 in total), 65 shrub species (about 3,200) and 144 perennial species and varieties (about 6,000). The plants are named in Finnish and Latin.
