Round Winners

The winner of round 104 did not need one million points to win. Congrats to TXL from Skåne to a second gold! AnneliCH from Skåne got her first silver. sim_en from Gävleborg held out and ended up with his first bronze. Four of the top five turfers this round hailed from Skåne, there must've been slightly less snow and a bit warmer there compared to other places. Well done mates! Bonanza 2019 - 18th of May in Stockholm

Come to the capital of Sweden and compete by foot or bike in the lovely royal Djurgården area. This is a great opportunity to meet and greet fellow turfers from everywhere. The competitions end with a festive dinner party, the Bonanza Banquet. All information about all of this and more can be found at: http://nyheter.turf08.se The registration period ends April 10th.

If you want your public event featured in Turf Insider, write to: insider@turfgame.com preferably at least two months in advance and add a web page if possible. After the event it is always fun to read a paragraph about it (winners, weather, funny episodes) and remember that a picture is always worth more than a 1000 words.

Turf Awards

Turf Awards are awarded to turfers who have made significant or particularly attentive achievements during the previous year or have been involved in an especially noted or spectacular zone takeover.

The original 57 nominations were reduced to five nominations in four classes by Turf Crew during February. It is now in the hands of the nominated fellow turfers to vote for their favorite in each category.

Link to the voting form can be found here (closes March 31, 2019): https://goo.gl/forms/VAFenyDiz6W7LoPv2

A mistake was made when vetting the nominations in the category ”Turf Star of the Year 2018”. The basic criteria that the turfer had to begin during 2018 was investigated for all nominated in this category. However, a communication error between members of Crew led to the false nomination of MaXi. He made a remarkable 2018, but he did not start his Turf account in 2018. So his nomination will be scratched. If you have voted for him, you can write to events@turfgame.com and cast your vote on one of the other four nominated in this category. Turf Crew is very sorry for the mistake!

The Turf Awards will be handed over to the winners by Turf Crew during the Bonanza Banquet in Stockholm on May 18, 2019.

Why keeping your Avatar visible is a good thing

On Wednesday the 27th of February, kamikatze posted in Turf Göteborg that she was worried about fellow turfer jodoff. She had been watching Turf-TV and observed how jodoff had been very still in a known dangerous part of the woods in Eastern Gothenburg. He did not answer when she tried to contact him in the Turf Chat and it was getting late. A turfer living in the area, reported that a helicopter was circling in the area. When his Avatar disappear, the discussion went to trying to inform the police about his position. Calls were made and luckily jodoff had been found when kamikatze talked to the police. Later jodoff commented in the Facebook-thread, saying he was very touched by how many cared for him although he did not know of it until he was safe at home.

If you feel that it is scary to have your Avatar on all the time because people might be watching, this is a time when it could have made the difference between life and death. The Turf Community cares!

So what happened to jodoff? Well, Turf Insider asked a few questions :)

What made you start with Turf? When did you start?

I saw in GP (local newspaper in Gothenburg), it was a small "technology box" that the magazine sometimes has. This was in April 2015. Seemed interesting. It has made me move and move. What hangs in the closet began to feel bigger after a while. The stairs began to feel easier.

What is the background to your Turf nick?

My nick name is a mixture of part of my first name and a part of my surname on ”the spin side” (red: the mother's side) of the family at an earlier stage of history.

What is the best thing about Turf?

The best thing about Turf is undoubtedly that I have seen many nice nature areas I did not know existed, especially in Gothenburg.

You became famous in Turf Gothenburg the other day when kamikatze became worried about you when your avatar stood still very long in the forest. What happened? Do you want to tell Turf Insider?

Short story: I dropped the phone I turf with in the forest but luckily I had one more with me that made it possible to contact someone outside the forest.

Long story: I was at "RidingaLake" and was going to take it. The turf app and I were however of different opinions. The sun started to stand very low and I knew it was a bit of a walk back to civilization. I thought it was best to go back home via "LongPower". When I was a bit on the way, I met two girls who knew the area. I asked them how to get out of the forest. Follow the "yellow track" they said. I tried to keep up with them, but fafter a couple of hundred meters I could not find the turf phone. It was gone, so I turned and tried to call it. At that moment I couldn't think of an easier way. I did not think that the Turf app was in my other phone as well.

It had become so dark that I understood that help was needed. I found an area in the forest that was a little more open and called 112 who linked me to the police. He wanted to know which phone number I called from. I rarely use that phone and definitely doesn't call it, so I could not give him a number. He was supposed to contact 112 and then call me. At the next contact with the police they had engaged a dog patrol and sent up a helicopter. It took a while for the helicopter to get close to me, so I could lit my phone and start waving. There were not good enough conditions for the helicopter to land close to me, but it remained near until the dog patrol made contact with me.

The rest was just transportation out of the forest with the shanks's pony and quad bikes.

Did you know that many turfers got involved in your fate?

No, not while it was going on. When I got home I dared to use the Turf phone because I could charge it. Then I discovered an email from Mani that I replied to that I was well and at home. She passed it on and it calmed down on Facebook. It feels very nice that you have friends that you do not know. Social media are effective and community services work when you once ask for help. Once I was found by a dog patrol, it was about a two km walk. Then "taxi" went home to the door. I was never worried out there in the wilderness. Afterwards I understood that others had been very worried for me.

What will be your next Turf adventure?

Trying to take all zones in Gothenburg. It is probably a multi-year project.

What personal goal are you most satisfied with?

One goal that I am very happy I have done is "Around the whole of Hisingen". Some try to take on the whole world, I am content with that little one.

Most memorable zone you have taken and why

A zone I remember especially is "Gärdsåskulle" Not really taking the zone, but when I am going down the road there are three guys with MBT leading the bikes up in order to properly be on the bikes down.

If you have a Turf meeting extraordinary, write to me at insider@turfgame.com :)

Next time I will delve into the art of writing an Issue. When to do it, how to do it and why we do it :)

We have reached ten billion points taken all together since the beginning of the game now, yay to us!
