Congrats to the winner of round 107: ZonerX from Stockholm! After silver, comes gold. Up until the Bonanza in Stockholm, ZonerX was fighting with M0112 from Åland for the gold, but after a trip over the sea to attend the Bonanza, M0112 lost too much and had to be satisfied to add a silver medal to his bronze from a couple of rounds ago. Finally grock from Norrbotten secured enough points for his first Bronze medal.
Well done mates!
Bonanza 2019 - 18th of May in Stockholm[redigera]
The Bonanza of 2019 took place in Stockholm on the 18th of May. The weather forecast a couple of days before the event was not very positive, but they were wrong. The day came with mostly sunshine, some clouds and lots of turfers :)
Unfortunately the first part of the Bonanza, the foot event, had some major issues. Both due to some Turf server optimizing issues that can only be tested at events as big as the Bonanza. Drassen did his best fast problem solving on a bench in the sunshine and this part of the issue was solved after 30-40 min. The other problem was an unfortunate update from Google just the days before the Bonanza. No real fix could be applied, reinstalling an older version of Turf was helpful for some turfers, and others had no problems whatsoever.
The winners of the Foot Event was Raudonvirsis (gold), Episode666 (silver) and RunOlofRun (bronze). The winners of the Bike Event was MrJokerit (gold), Eddyueue (silver) and MerCurious (bronze). Congrats to a Bonanza well done! More from the Bonanza here: http://nyheter.turf08.se/
During the Bonanza Banquet, the Turf Awards winners of 2018 were revealed.
- Zone Takeover - Florence & Entertainer
- Newbie of the year - Ghost63_Ume
- Turfer of the Year - SunYour
- Turf Acievement of the Year - Király
Congratulations to the Turf Award winners of 2018 and let this be the beginning of a new tradition!
It was also revealed where we will gather next year to compete in the Bonanza 2020. The honor of organizing the Bonanza was passed on to Örebro – more information will follow!
During the banquet Drassen gave a short speech about Turf and introduced the new hashtag ”plurfa”, a way to combine turf with picking up trash (”plocka skräp” in Swedish) in the zones. So next time you see a zone with trash in it, pick it up, take a photo with the in-app camera, post it on social media with #plurfa and we turfers will clean up the world one zone at the time!
Two events take place on the same date in June. GtbOpen2019, https://www.turfgoteborg.se/2019/04/14/turf-gbg-open-2019/, one event with two classes (foot and bike).
On the 8th-9th of June, Midnight Classic will be organized for the sixth time in Umeå. Don't miss to go north for this special event with a two-hour event spanning over two days and where it will be as bright in the middle of the night as on a somewhat cloudy day :)
It is also time to prepare for the next team Turf-event in Kalmar in September. Each 3-turfer team will bike for 6 hours, each member doing 4x30 min. The changeover will be at the same spot for everyone at the same time, that will make for some real-time zone grabbing action! Read all about it here: http://media.kalmarturf.se/2019/03/Inbjudan-6-timmars-lagturfevent.pdf
If you want your public event featured in Turf Insider, write to: email@example.com] preferably at least two months in advance and add a web page if possible. After the event it is always fun to read a paragraph about it (winners, weather, funny episodes) and remember that a picture is always worth more than a 1000 words.
During the Ascension Day weekend I went to Kalmar with some fellow Uppsala turfers. The goal was to collect unique zones, which we did, and enjoy the good weather (only a few drops of rain found us) and meet fellow turfers. On Friday we met up with four Kalmar turfers for lunch at a very nice vegetarian all-you-can-eat restaurant. It is always fun to exchange experiences and obsess about zones, the ones you love and the ones you hate, but take anyway!
On Saturday me and my partner had very few zones left in Kalmar, so we headed west to Nybro, a small city we had visited four years earlier and 'painted white' (meaning we took every zone there, and since this was before Assist, we did it by planning a route where we could bike to all zones in a kind of circle, where we took the zones from each other for half the session). Four years later, Nybro looked like it had a severe case of rubella; red zones among the white ones everywhere! We had over 40 unique zones to explore and add to our collection, yay!
We parked our car by the glass hut Pukaberg, took down our bikes and headed off. Ploff! A local turfer showed up and blocked the first unique zone for us. So we shouted out ”Assist” in the chat and eventually met up with him; Podde, a junior high student. He had been a turfer for three months and really enjoyed playing the game. He became our guide, or we his...since we did end up taking LångaKärret together and it was his first take.
Maybe hook up with a fellow turfer (newbie, oldie, traveller or local you have never met) this summer and collect those Assist together. Or organize a picnic with fellow turfers in a zone and send the picture to firstname.lastname@example.org :)
Turfa lugnt/Safe turfing!
