Kyrkudden is a turfzone in the municipality of Gotland in the region of Gotland in Sweden.

Placement[edit]

This zone is placed by the Kyrkudden lighthouse, on the island of Gotska Sandön located in the Baltic Sea 40 kilometers north of Fårö.

The Lighthouses[edit]

During the 1840s, several petitions were made to the Administration of Maritime Affairs, that a lighthouse should be erected on the northwestern part of Gotska Sandön. It turned out, however, that the lighthouse did not illuminate the sea around the entire island. But around 1850, the administration changed its mind and suggested to the Kings Council, that two lighthouses would be erected on the island. In 1857, the estates of the kingdom allocated funds for the lighthouse. In the years 1858–59, two lighthouses were erected at Bredsand on the north-western part of the island. Because the ground consisted of loose sand, the lighthouse designer Gustav von Heidenstam had the lighthouse towers founded with screw piles.

To facilitate contacts between the lighthouses on the island, a local telephone line was installed two years later.

Two identical lighthouses with a steady light were thus built on Gotska Sandön during the 1850s to warn of the dangerous Kopparstenarna ground. Foundation conditions on the island required a particularly light construction. The lighthouses were constructed as wood-clad steel skeletons and were founded on screw piles. The southern lighthouse tower was demolished in 1903 and the remaining northern tower was rebuilt.

In 1882, the Swedish Maritime Administration requested funds from the Kings Council to build another lighthouse on Sandön's southeast cape (Kyrkudden Lighthouse). At first, the administration was dismissive, saying that there were few accidents there, and that a new lighthouse would most likely be misleading in the waters. Despite this, this lighthouse was later also built on Gotska Sandön.

Kyrkudden Lighthouse[edit]

  • In 1913 the lighthouse was built.
  • In 1914 the lighthouse had AGA lights with a Light height of 12.5 m.
  • In 1990, the lighthouse received electric light.
  • White 12.4 m tall lighthouse.
