It gained its independence in 1991 as one of the successor states of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Federal_Republic_of_Yugoslavia Yugoslavia]. A landlocked country, North Macedonia has borders with [[Country: Kosovo|Kosovo]] to the northwest, [[Country:Serbia|Serbia]] to the northeast, [[Country:Bulgaria|Bulgaria]] to the east, [[Country:Greece|Greece]] to the south, and [[Country:Albania|Albania]] to the west.
