Grosser Müggelberg (German spelling: Großer Müggelberg) was originally intended as the site of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernsehturm_Berlin Berlin TV Tower] and was East Berlin's highest point. The TV tower was already being built in 1954 when construction was interrupted in 1955 in order not to place the tower directly on the approach to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Sch%C3%B6nefeld_Airport Berlin-Schönefeld Airport]. Instead, the completed 31 meter high part of the tower came to be used as an eavesdropping facility by the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi Stasi]. Since German reunification, the tower is used by [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Telekom Deutsche Telekom] for targeted radio communications. There is also a 64 meter high radio mast on the mountain.
