== The Lighthouses ==
During the 1840s, several petitions were made to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Maritime_Administration Administration of Maritime Affairs], that a lighthouse should be erected on the northwestern part of Gotska Sandön. It turned out, however, that the lighthouse did not illuminate the sea around the entire island. But around 1850, the administration changed its mind and suggested to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_in_Council_(Sweden) Kings Council], that two lighthouses would be erected on the island. In 1857, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riksdag_of_the_Estates estates of the kingdom] allocated funds for the lighthouse. In the years 1858–59, two lighthouses were erected at Bredsand on the north-western part of the island. To facilitate contacts between the lighthouses on the island, a local telephone line was installed two years later.
