Savukoski (Inari Sami Suovâkuoškâ, Northern Sami Suovvaguoika) is a municipality in the region of Lappi (Lapland) in Finland. The municipality has about 1000 inhabitants and is located in the historical province of Lapland.

Savukoski is one of the largest municipalities in Finland, areawise, and the most sparsely settled. The river Kemijoki runs through it. Forestry and reindeer husbandry have traditionally been the main livelihood of the local population. There are ten times more reindeer than people in Savukoski. Nowadays tourism is also getting more important.

Location[edit]

Bordering municipalities are Sodankylä in the north and west, Pelkosenniemi in the southwest and Salla in the southeast. The municipality also borders to Russia in the northeast.

Urban areas[edit]

The main town in the municipality is Savukoski church village which is also the municipality's only urban area which had 418 inhabitants in December 2015.
