Hållö lighthouse[edit]

Hållö lighthouse is a so-called mooring lighthouse located on Hållö outside Smögen in Bohuslän.

The lighthouse was built in 1842, as a round white stone tower. The lighthouse turned out to be too low as it was obscured in the west by Sälö. They then contacted the then hired lighthouse designer Nils Gustav von Heidenstam, who provided the lighthouse with a 5 meter high steel plate shoe in 1868. After that, the lighthouse became 20 meters high and had its current light height of 39.2 meters above sea level. The lighthouse is owned by the Swedish Maritime Administration and has been a state monument since 25 January 1935.

During the 1830s, a lighthouse was planned along the fairway past the Väderöarna and further out towards Kungshamn on the West Coast. In these discussions, both the Väderöarna and Sälö were included in the discussions before it was finally decided that the lighthouse would be built on the cliff Hållö, near the large inlet to Kungshamn. Drawings and building descriptions were drawn up.

A building contract was concluded with Jonas Jonsson, who has just finished with the lighthouses in the Gothenburg archipelago. In the years 1841–1842, a cylindrical stone tower about 10 meters high was built. Furthermore, a residential house was built of timber - paneled and painted red in 1844 - and an outbuilding. The lighthouse was lit in the autumn of 1842.

At the top of the lantern, a mirror device was mounted, consisting of nine parabolic mirrors with the same number of turnbuckle lamps on a rotating steel ring. Nowadays, these are replaced with electric clips. In 1918, the lighthouse consisted of a white flashlight with a flash every five seconds. The light had a strength of "72,000 normal lights" and was visible in 18 distance minutes.

The lighthouse is shown to the public from midsummer until mid-August. This is done by the Association Hållö lighthouse. Then you can go up to the lighthouse and enjoy the wide view, which stretches from Väderöbod in the north to Måseskär in the south.
