Svenska Margaretakyrkan[edit]

Svenska Margaretakyrkan is a church in Hammersborg in Oslo that belongs to the Church of Sweden. The church was completed in 1925 and has the address Hammersborg torg 8.

The Church of Sweden began its work in Kristiania in 1911, when the first priest, Oscar Krook, was sent there. A Swedish church association was founded in 1913. At the beginning of the 20th century, many Swedes lived in the city, more than 13,000 in 1901 out of a population of around 225,000, in 1920 around 9,000 (Swedish citizens and their children). The first contribution to the church building came from the laundress Sofia Johansson, who visited and gave the priest 2 Crowns as a start-up contribution.

The architect was Lars Israel Wahlman, who also designed the Engelbrekt Church in Stockholm. The altarpiece depicts the Sermon on the Mount and is painted by Gunnar Torhamn.
