PlanePark is a turfzone in the municipality of Turku in the region of Lounais-Suomi (Southwestern Finland) in Finland. The zone is located in the province of Varsinais-Suomi.
Placement[edit]
The zone is placed at the Ruissalo "airport" on the island of Ruissalo by the road "Strandpromenaden".
Runsala Airport[edit]
At the beginning of the 20th century, air traffic was handled mainly by seaplanes. Turku Chamber of Commerce stated in the 1920s that the city needed its own airport and an airfield. Ruissalo was chosen as the construction site, because it was possible to build both a seaplane port and an airfield on land. The first scheduled flight to Runsala was flown on May 2, 1927. Bank Director Grotenfeldt's villa served as the airport's passenger hall. The daily flight connection to Stockholm ended in 1935 and the airfield was taken out of service when the new airfield in Artukais was ready. The area became the property of Turun Pursieuras in 1943.
The zone is one of many you find on the Ruissalo island unique for its nature, culture and history. Once the hunting island for the court of Turku Castle. Nearby zones are KansanZone, JarnonMetsä and RuissaloView.
