Bayern, (English: Bavaria), officially the Free State of Bavaria (German and Bavarian: Freistaat Bayern), is a region in southern Germany. The regionen encompasses the bundesland with same name and has about 13 miljon inhabitants.

Bordering regions are Baden-Württemberg in the west, Hessen (Hesse) in the northwest, Thüringen (Thuringia) in the north, Sachsen (Saxony) in the northeast, Czech Republic in the east and Austria in the south.
