Korsholm Church[edit]

Korsholm's church is the parish church for the Korsholm's Swedish congregation. The building is located in the Gamla Vasa district, designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz, built between 1776 and 1786. The house is considered one of the best representatives of the Gustavian style in Finland and was originally a court building.

After the Vaasa city fire in 1852, it was decided that the city would move closer to the coast. The Court of Appeal building was one of the few that escaped the great fire. A new church was built in Vaasa and the Court of Appeal also got a new building. The old Court of Appeal was therefore unused. As the county still had no church after the destroyed gray stone church Sankta Maria from the 14th century, the emperor decided to hand it over to the congregation as a church. The rebuilding was planned by Vaasa's then county architect Carl Axel Setterberg and was done between the years 1862 and 1863. The facade was preserved, but inside, walls were demolished and the church was provided with an inner vault. The belfry was built from bricks from the vaults of the medieval church. One of the church bells is cast from the metal from the old church bells.
