Groningen is one of twelve regions in the Netherlands. The region includes the province of the same name and has about 580 000 inhabitants.

The largest city is the provincial capital Groningen. Other major cities are Hoogezand and Veendam.

Adjacent regions are Drenthe in the south, Friesland in the west and Niedersachsen (in Germany) in the east.
