Umeå is a municipality in the region of Västerbotten in Sweden. The municipality has about 129,700 inhabitants and is located for the most part in the province of Västerbotten. A small part of the municipality is located in the province of Ångermanland.

Location
The municipality is located at Kvarken in the east and borders the municipalities Skellefteå in the north, Robertsfors in the northeast, Nordmaling in the southwest and Vännäs and Vindeln in the west, all in Västerbotten County. In the east, the municipality has a maritime border to Korsholm municipality in the province Ostrobothnia in region a Länsi- ja Sisä-Suomi (Western and Inner Finland) in Finland.
Urban areas
The urban area Umeå constitutes the municipality's central town and is also a city of residence in Västerbotten County. With approximately 90,400 inhabitants, Umeå is also Norrland's largest urban area.
