Luleå is a municipality in the region of Norrbotten in Sweden. The municipality has about 79,200 inhabitants and lies in its entirety in the province of Norrbotten.

In the direction from northwest to southwest, the Lule river flows through the municipality.

Location[edit]

Luleå municipality is located in the southern parts of the province of Norrbotten. The municipality has the Bothnia Bay in the east and neighboring municipalities are Piteå and Älvsbyn in the southwest, Boden in the west, Överkalix in the north and Kalix in the northeast, all in Norrbotten County.

Urban areas[edit]

The urban area of Luleå is the largest with approximately 49,100 inhabitants and constitutes the municipality's central city, the city is also the residence city in Norrbotten County.

Other urban areas in the municipality are Antnäs, Bensbyn, Bergnäset, Brändön, Bälinge, Ersnäs, Gammelstaden, Hällbacken and Sinksundet, Jämtön, Kallax, Karlsvik, Klöverträsk, Måttsund, Persön, Rutvik, Råneå, Sundom, Södra Sunderbyn and Ängesbyn.
