World Heritage Sites

The symbol of a world heritage site

A World Heritage Site is a place (such as a building, city, complex, desert, forest, island, lake, monument, or mountain) that is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as being of special cultural or physical significance (source: wikipedia).

There are 1157 World Heritage Sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List and 1151 World Heritage Zones in the world.

The most World Heritage Zones are found in China (56), followed by Italy (53), Germany (47), France (46) and Spain (45).

The most taken World Heritage Zone is StaKarinsRuin, located in Visby in the municipality of Gotland in the region of Gotland in Sweden.

Only one turf zone per World Heritage Site can be counted as a World Heritage Zone. This also applies when the world heritage covers several countries.
