Brandenburg is a region in northeastern Germany. Brandenburg surrounds the national capital and city-state of Berlin, and together they form the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, the third-largest metropolitan area in Germany with a total population of about 6.2 million. There was an unsuccessful attempt to unify both states in 1996 and the states cooperate on many matters to this day.

Bordering regions are Sachsen (Saxony) in the south, Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) in the west, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the north and Poland in the east.

The Oder river forms a part of the eastern border, the Elbe river a portion of the western border. The main rivers in the state itself are the Spree and the Havel. In the southeast, there is a wetlands region called the Spreewald.
