Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) is a region in northwestern Germany. The region encompasses the bundesland with the same name and has about eight million inhabitants.
The region Bremen is almost entirely enclosed by Lower Saxony. Other bordering regions are Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg in the north, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the northeast, Brandenburg and Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) in the east, Thüringen (Thuringia) in the southeast, Hessen (Hesse) in the south, Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia) in the southwest as well as Overijssel, Drenthe and Groningen (in the Netherlands) in the west.
