Niedersachsen is a region in northwestern Germany. The region encompasses the bundesland with the same name and has about eight million inhabitants. The region Bremen is almost entirely enclosed by Niedersachsen. Other bordering regions are Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg in the north, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the northeast, Brandenburg and Sachsen-Anhalt in the east, Thüringen in the southeast, Hessen in the south, Nordrhein-Westfalen in the southwest as well as Overijssel, Drenthe and Groningen (in the Netherlands) in the west.
